Large two-piece porcelain enameled sign that reads "PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY / OF NORTHERN ILLINOIS / AUTOMATIC DISTRIBUTION CENTER." Sign is overall 12′ 9" by 28 inches high; made in two pieces that bolt together.
Public Service Company of Northern Illinois was a gas and electric company created in 1950 by the merger of Western United Gas & Electric Company and Illinois Northern Utilities Company. In 1953, the company merged with Commonwealth Edison (a predecessor of Exelon Corporation), so this sign was created in the 1950-53 period. It is not clear what was automatic about a distribution center, but perhaps this had to do with a switchyard and some automatic distribution feature of its operation.
Sign is in two sections, the left is 5′ 2" and right is 7′ 8" with the two overlapping one inch when joined. Both sections have steel angle iron bracketing around the edges, making this a heavy item. Surface has the usual chipping of the porcelain as easily seen in the photos below, but little of this affects the lettering. Please ignore the glare on the sign in some of the photos below.
